After looking at the photo's I like the stand, a nice un-obstructed view of the right side.

I would like the wood to match the gun's stock as far as grain and color.

The base would lend itself well to be engraved with the "AUT-ORD-CO" logo as found on the top of the early Colt receivers.

Zeplen, I like it. Perhaps you could offer it unfinished and let the customer decide on the finish.

Other that that ( Tongue in cheek ) You could have 3/4" lag bolts to secure it , yea about 10 of them that's the ticket, or some 1/2" re-bar and a bag of concrete yea that mike make it stable,

Really though nice work.

Firemerc; Thanks for posting this for me, it looks great you do nice work. Z

As far as darkening the wood I think it would lose the outline of the Thompson, you know (contrast) make the gun stand out not the stand. I think the Thompson and the stand are both works of art and offset each other well. I made this out of 1 1/4" red oak I sawed, plained and sanded myself, all I did to finish it was linseed oil

Zeplen,

It looks great, but to my eye, might it be a little top heavy and unstable? Hate to see that thing tip over. But it might be O.K. as is, if it seems that way to you. Otherwise, a little widening of the base or an unobtrusive stainless rod for an outrigger on the left side would fix it; just insert the rod when the whole thing is set up on a table; maybe with a little rubber end on the rod, to match it with table height.

Hi Phil

Glad you like it, I know you have skills so I'll offer this for thought on the top heavy comment. The base is over 8" wide from the back of the uprights to the front. The angle of the uprights transfers the weight from the rear most lower tips of the uprights to the front of the bullet base. That C drum is almost five pounds hanging dead center well below the center of gravity kinda like the crank on my Harley, it rides the stand well! I have not even felt that it has chance of tipping over. I do think that I should drill the uprights just below the reciever for leather tie downs to keep any heavy walking in the house from vibrating it off the flats. That it. Zeplen

Zeplen, I would cation you on using leather as the tannins in the leather discolor the bluing. Much like a pistol stored in a holster. I'll bet that the collective minds here can come up with a solution.

Zeplen,

That's good, if you are sure it's stable. And some kind of hold downs are a good idea, if they look O.K. But be careful with leather in long-term contact with gun steel. There are a few different ways of tanning it, and some of the residual chemicals can really rust up a gun after awhile; maybe after a very short while. With others, even though the experts warn you to never store a gun in a leather holster, you can do it for 50 - 75 years (literally, I know) and nothing bad will happen. You might like the mounting so much you leave it there for months, then undo the leather hold-downs, and find that...oops!

I'm running a long-term devil's advocate experiment, regarding those leather warnings. I just got out, to check, a mint condition long barrel H&R "Sportsman" top break .22 target revolver from the mid-1950s. I bought it maybe 15 years ago, in the original Bucheimer "Perfect Fit...top grain cowhide...Cowboy Holster"...in which the sole owner had always kept it in a drawer. There's still no sign of any sort of corrosion or interaction between leather and steel. We have a lot of seasonal temperature and humidity changes here in Ohio. But then, Bucheimer would know what to use.

That something I didn't think of, Thanks. I've changed my mind on that. I'm just going to tilt the flats to the rear a little and any vibration it acures will lend to set it tighter into the stand. I like the clean lines and tie downs would distract from them.

When I make such supports, I let the sides come up about 3/4" on either side of the receiver. It may slightly detract, visually, but the gun is staying there. And it can sit that way for years, as in a gun rack.

Yes I did that as well with my first stend I used for the 20s and 50s, on my new one the mount behind the rear grip has a 1/4 moon shape that keeps it from sliding from side to side. Z

Well I didn't know thier were so many wood workers on this board, I see 200+ looking and no one else has any comments you must be out in the wood shop working on your own stands or something more fun like shooting your guns.

Nice stand! I like the AUTORDCO vintage emblem Idea, engraved in the wood. I agree with you in the contrasting color. Blonde wood here is a nice look. Neither outpowers each other for the eye feasting.

Maybe a life boat davit design might offset the weight of gravity. Or maybe I been drink too much Mt Dew again.-adlake
