1929 Thompson ?

Recommended Posts

GUTTERRATT,

He's referring to Model of 1929 B.S.A. Thompsons. They have a different appearance than the classic TSMG, and were made in very limited numbers in England by B.S.A. for Auto-Ordnance in an effort to stir European sales. The firearm uses the Blish locking mechanism, and was not commercially successful. They are covered in both of Tracie Hill's Collector Grade Publications Thompson books.

For some reason I seem to remember reading that the Chinese turned out some Thompsons is 30 Mauser. This was done due to the popularity of the C96(Broomhandle) pistol in that caliber and the wide availability of 30 Mauser ammo.

Jim

Jim,

Yes, there were some Thompson Submachine Guns that the Chinese converted to .30 Mauser. They are not the 1929 Model B.S.A. Thompsons which are referred to by GUTTERRATT, mentioned in the post on Sturmgewehr.com.

There wasn't one for sale Norm, it was an ad for a Colt '21 barrel, the ad just mentions that he had sold the '29 Thompson barrel in 30 Mauser he'd had.

Oh..OK.

Nevertheless, it's gone now.

Does anybody have a picture of a 1929 B.S.A Thompson ?

GUTTERRAT,

They look like the 4 B.S.A. Thompsons in the middle of this picture. I believe the two in the middle are B.S.A. Model 1929's serial nos. 7 & 8, in .30 Mauser.

Notice the drop in the stock of the example at the top.

David: Can you tell us the source of this picture?

Jim

Jim,

I took the picture at the 2007 NRA Convention in St. Louis. This was part of our club display. (The American Thompson Association)

Here's the link to a post where you can see all the pictures.

That has to be the best Thompson display I have ever seen, I'd like to have one of those B.S.A.'s The whole thing looks awsom. I like the L drum with the star shaped rotor.

Every so often one of the "BSA" thompson mags in .30 tokorev (mauser) shows up on one of the auction sites or vendors. I picked up two of them last year to go with my chinese modified 1928 parts set...also found a spare bolt that was modified. This way, I don't need the mag-well adapter the chinese came up with...that involves drilling a hole in the trigger group and some other modifications...the BSA mags slide right in. They were not cheap...around $500 each !! But...at least now I have the entire conversion set.
