smithwr3
Some great folks have posted step by step instructions with pictures showing how to un-sporterize Saiga's and putting together stripped AR-15 lower receivers. They have really helped me out in a couple of projects. Is anyone aware of a page with pictures showing the process of how to do the mag catch mod for a semi 1927A1? ghostsoldier
It's not that hard, just a bit time-consuming, as you have to test-fit it repeatedly to make sure it works. Here's the some-what blurry before-and-after pics of mine; I used a Dremel to do it....you're basically just deepening the catch notch. dalbert
smithwr3 and ghostsoldier, Thank you for the suggestion, and the follow-up to the suggestion in this post. I have just added this thread to the pinned reference section at the top of the page. Thanks! David Albertdalbert@sturmgewehr.com

pitfighter
Great help - If we wanted to retain the 1927A1 mag catch as it was? Would a 1928 SMG Mag catch also work as a drop in replacement? Thanks, Pit.
Gio
pitfighter, Yes the 1928 mag catch will work in a 1927A1. The pics in this post a great. I would recomend printing them and when modifying yours they make a good reference. Good luckFrank
SecondAmend
To get the catch modification to hold reliably on most of the unmodified mags that I have, I had to grind down slightly more (about 1/2 mm) than shown in the 'ghostsoldier' photos. And I have a few Crosby mags (known to have out of spec issues) that do not reliably hold even with the additional material removal. All the non-Crosby and some of the Crosby latch and hold. It took about five tries of only removing a little at a time to get to get the modified catch to "catch". Best of luck with your project.
pitfighter
Thank you - I will buy one and grind slowly, checking regularly. I received one Auto-Ordnance semi-mag with the 1927A1 -and have a dozen or so unaltered surplus 30 rounders. This is my first Thompson variation, so moving slowly - my thing has always been German firearms. But, harboring an obsession with the American Gangster since an early age I realized it was just a matter of time before I crumbled and bought one.Looking at Tommygunner's easy pull springs, fitting the quick detach stock system, redoing the wood, and altering the selector to work as a bolt hold open, or third hand in drum replacement - fun! Jim W
As the photos in the post by Ghostsoldier no longer seem to show, I am taking the liberty of redoing his post, with the photos that were still hosted on Photobucket, but no longer link: It's not that hard, just a bit time-consuming, as you have to test-fit it repeatedly to make sure it works.
