wwiifirearms
While I wait on my form 1 I thought I would start figuring out what will need to be done on my MP18 to REWAT.Looks like: Barrel, barrel bushing, bolt faceMeasuring with a cleaning rod, I think the barrel might be repairable since the weld does not appear to reach the rifling. The bolt could be the bigger issue, as it was only welded, but also had the face ground off.http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/E28FA1F8-8169-4E74-A1C9-840ED92E697E.jpghttp://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/D7070657-F6EE-4EF0-823A-8D75E8C938A3.jpghttp://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/913A2632-AACA-41EC-BFDF-DB95CCB0553D.jpghttp://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/49A0F25B-4CC5-4DE3-A2A4-5173351B7F7D.jpghttp://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/258D8516-4F2D-4ECE-B1F1-57587658F8EF.jpghttp://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/D49646A8-D4B4-495D-85E5-272373683FE7.jpghttp://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss281/wwiifirearms/MP18/B220773E-4D65-49CF-B2A5-E8E8BD577550.jpg Edited August 23, 2015 by wwiifirearms
johnsonlmg41
In relative terms......the barrel does look easy. Once you break that free and get it out you can fix it up. As you mentioned normally the rifling is fine and the chamber can be touched up if need be. I'd weld up the bolt face and recut everything back to spec. I would have to look and see if there is enough bolt left that you may be able to recut it without adding weld? If you post the OAL that you have (I can't read it) I'll check one of mine to see how much is missing and if there is enough room in the cocking slot without trimming it? I'm assuming the bolt is numbered to the gun? Even if it's not MP18 bolts are difficult to come by. You could start with a Indianapolis Ordnance Lanchester bolt and rework that to fit to get the gun to run. ....maybe. Classic good looking German gun! I prefer the stick model for shooting, but nothing beats the look of the snail drum on the side.
wwiifirearms
Thanks! That would be very helpful.Bolt is 4.087inches, +\- about .050 since it isn't perfectly square. If it Isn't a hassle,, a few pictures of the bolt face and/or chamber area of one of yours that might also be really helpful.I know posting pictures can be a pain. If emailing pictures is easier, I can post them to share with others. If pictures are a pain, no worries the measurement alone would be great to know. Thanks again,Ray
johnsonlmg41
Well here's some info for you. My stick gun has a bolt OAL of 4.114, snail drum gun 4.082. Just for grins I pulled a lanchester bolt OAL 4.090. Everything about the lanchester bolt is identical to the MP18i's with the exception of the oversize firing pin bore/ spring location. You could either adapt the back cap rim/ firing pin/ spring setup to use that or sleeve down a lanchester bolt to accept the MP18 firing pin/ spring combo. I'd be looking at an MP28 here if I had one, but that uses the larger spring, other than that I'm not aware of any other differences. This gives you a lot of options at least to get the gun running.
