Wwii '28 Thompson Shipping Crates....

Recommended Posts

Hey folks!

Looking to create a display of tommygun crates/crated guns, and need info on the shipping cates, original WW2 finishes, colors, markings (stencilling and other) as well as hardware, gun dividers, seals, etc.

I've seen some photos here of the Brits and USGI's uncrating '28 tommyguns with the crates in the pictures....that's what I'm looking for (but can't seem to find any in the archives...) http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif

I also recall someone posting pix a couple years ago of the guns found in Russia before they were sold for parts....some cool pix of Thompsons in their crates, crates stacked up, etc. http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

Anyone with any photos like this, could you either post them here (for all to enjoy) or email them to me?

Thanks all! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/wink.gif

john,

There was a guy at the SAR show in December that had one of the WWII shipping crates. It was full of 1928's with dummy receivers, and his display was in the regular gun show area. I don't recall who it was, but he had a lot of different parts kits assembled on dummy receivers, and MG tripods, etc. Maybe an inquiry to IMA, or others doing similar business might be able to provide some pictures, or maybe even an original crate.

John - Are these the pictures you are talking about? Call Don Bell at Omega: (520) 889-8895. He may have a crate or two left. These are from an Omega shipment several months ago as originally posted by TMAN.

Just as a point of curiosity, did they get shipped here and then cut (so the picture was taken here before they met the saw or torch), or cut out of country, then shipped here? That would really suck, having a job of taking an torch or saw to these guns, probably drive a man to drink.

Dan,

The 28 part kits from Omega did not include a receiver part on the barrel. That, along with price, was why I liked the Omega 28 kits. It is possible the stripped receivers are in storage someplace overseas.

I talked to a guy that has over 1800 of the receivers in his basement. Every kit he got, he would take the receivers off and store them for the next coming.

Too bad they are not in the USA.

That sounds made up.... Receivers stacked like cord wood eh... http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/dry.gif Anyhow I tried for a long time to get a crate from Omega and all I got was the famous "SG drum" sandbag talk... Never did get one.....

Cool pix so far...thanks guys! http://www.machinegunbooks.com/forums/invboard1_1_2/upload/html/emoticons/cool.gif

This is kinda what I had imagined doing. A few airsoft guns in the bottom of the crate covered with cosmoline and wax paper (if the cosmo doesn't melt the plastic?!!) and decent dummy guns on top. Don't know how many I can afford, but I have two parts kits and probably should order a couple decent dummy receivers before they go out of production (But with my daughter just gone off to college, I may have to dig deep to afford 'em!)

A couple of these pix I had seen but didn't save copies (but now I have!) and a couple are new.

Thought it was 21Colt or maybe someone else took a trip to Russia a year or so ago and posted several pictures of the guns before they were taken apart.

Also, I have seen a couple pix over the years of Auto-ordnance factory workers crating up new '28s for shipment, as well as British and American Ordnance personnel uncrating new Tommyguns.....

My search engines are coming up with zilch, but as you guys have proven, the pix are out there!

Thanks again.

John

I have lots of color pictures of M1's,M1A1's,M1928A1's with adjustable lymans, fixed lymans, ribbed barrels and smooth barrels but have no way of hosting them so I can post them here. All came from the Russia batch and were not chopped at the time the pics were took.

The crates held 10 guns, 100 xx mags, 10 oilers,10 screw drivers,10 cleaning rods, 10 felt washers for the oilers, 10 belts and 10 mag pouches.
